Dentures – Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are dentures made of?
A: Dentures can be made from a variety of materials for different purposes. For example, some dentures are made from metal, whilst others are made of a hard plastic like acrylic – and sometimes a combination of both metals & plastics. This will all be down to what is best for your mouth and day-to-day activities, in order to make sure that you are comfortable with whichever material your denture is made from.

Q: How long do dentures last?
A: As we get older, the bone in our bodies shrinks. This is no different to the bone in our jaw, which of course, a denture would sit on top of. Because of this, you may find that you have to visit your dentist to adjust your denture over time. Dentures may need replacing after 5 to 8 years, but this can be extended when treated with proper care and attention.

Q: How do I care for my dentures?
A: Caring for your dentures is an essential part of helping them last for longer all the while saving you money! There are three main areas of caring for your denture:

  • Brushing – Do not brush your denture using normal toothpaste! Toothpaste is made for teeth. Though your denture may be made from a very durable plastic, some toothpastes contain chemicals specifically for the enamel on teeth, which can interfere with your denture, and sometimes scratch them, or remove the colour. Brushing with a denture brush or a soft-bristled toothbrush is the best way to remove any debris.
  • Cleaning – In order to clean your denture properly, use a dish washing liquid and a special denture brush to clean your dentures by hand every day.
  • Soaking – Once you have brushed and cleaned your denture, rinse them thoroughly, and leave to soak in a water-based cleaning solution overnight. By the morning, your denture will be squeaky clean!

Q: Can I eat normally with dentures?
A: If you have just had your dentures fitted, it can take a little while to get used to eating the foods you used to. However, that’s not to say that you will never eat these foods again – far from it. In fact, many of our patients have commented that they are able to enjoy the foods they did before their denture. If food is hard or sticky, please be careful and prepare the food appropriately as sometimes these can fracture or get stuck to dentures. We warn all our patients to stay away from chewing gum!

Q: I need dentures. Where do I start?
