Dental Myth busting: Dentures

Myth No. 1: It is Difficult to Eat with Dentures…
Admittedly, new dentures do take some time getting used to. However, once the initial adjustment period is over, people with dentures should be able to eat the same foods they once did!

It’s a matter of making sure dentures are well-fitting, starting off with small bites of soft food, and gradually working your way up to include other foods. Although this process takes some practice, you can learn to eat comfortably with dentures.

Myth No. 2: Dentures Last Forever!
While the idea of that sounds nice, dentures are not any more permanent than glasses. Most dentures last between five to eight years, some lasting as long as ten years. Just like any other product, over time, even with conscious care, dentures can lose their natural appearance and chewing ability. Taking good care of your dentures will help to extend the life of them with the proper care.

Myth No. 3: Now I have a full denture; I don’t need to go to the dentist anymore.
No! As a dentist, we can assure you that this is not true. Your mouth is made up of more than just your teeth. When you get an oral exam, your dentist is checking your gums, tongue, and the side of your mouth as well as your teeth. Your mouth is an area where disease shows it’s first signs and symptoms, so even if you don’t have any teeth left, it is vital for your health that you continue to visit your dentist. Your dentist can also help to spot problems with your denture that you may not have noticed yet and can help to solve them before they become a bigger problem.

Myth No. 4: Dentures are too Expensive!
This denture myth is one that deters a lot of people away from the whole idea of solving their missing teeth problem! We offer many ways of paying for your treatment, including spreading the cost with 0% interest. Dentures might seem expensive in the short term, but they are an investment in your oral health and quality of life!

Myth No. 5: Dentures Don’t Look Natural
Nowadays, dentures are so natural-looking that you may not even realise some of your close friends or family members wear them! All of our dentists have extensive experience in shades & colouring, in order to make sure that your teeth look like your existing teeth – or, if you have no teeth left, bring in a photo! The dentist can help you to create a denture that looks like your old smile.
